Arts Administration

Dr. George’s administrative experience includes work as a staff and faculty technical director at several universities.  As such he is knowledgeable of the processes required to assemble and mount theatre seasons from both the academic and artistic standpoints as well as mindful of budgetary limitations. He also has service as a three term member of the City of Bowie Arts Committee, an advisory body to the City Council that is instrumental in procuring artwork for the City’s numerous public spaces. The Committee also oversees the City Arts Grants and Scholarship programs. He has written successful grants at the local university level and has sat on numerous grant review committees time.

Most recently he served as Executive Director of the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts, a public / private partnership between the organization that built the facility, Prince George’s County Public Schools (the owner of record), the City of Bowie, and Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, with an operating budget of $480,000.  During his nearly ten years at the Center, Dr. George brought the facility on line and established operating procedures, staffing levels, hiring procedures, booking practices, and the like with an eye toward the needs of local artists’ and consumers of the performing arts. The Center also worked with the partners to present events sponsored by those organizations, included producing and supporting productions and concerts from the local high school (to which the building is physically attached) and feeder schools. This in addition to establishing programs and artistic partnerships that allowed the use of the space by a number of groups that otherwise would not have been able to afford the rental rates but who were speaking to those under-represented in the local arts community.
